O'Reilly, Certified Elder Law Attorney James O'Reilly is the founder and past President of the Nevada State Bar Section on Elder Law and has the distinction of being the first Certified Elder Law Attorney in Nevada. He presented his five rules for every family facing a long-term illness: 1. Admit there is an illness 2. Get control of the assets 3. Make sure Wills and Trusts are up-to-date 4. Are Health Care documents up to date? 5. Seek emotional support and counseling He also presented his financial concerns for families facing long-term nursing home care: 1. You can't do this alone - cost and emotional response is a killer 2. Do you have $6K per month to pay for nursing home care? 3. Nursing home insurance may be a good value for some 4. Government programs are extremely limited 5. Spousal impoverishment is real He gave the audience many tips including get your Health Care Directive registered by the NV Secretary of State and get your Financial Power of Attorney updated to reflect the laws that went into effect on October 1, 2009. |
